Sharjah Art Foundation in collaboration with Air Arabia presents A Tripoli Agreement, a research project and exhibition curated by Renan Laru-an that features newly commissioned works and performances as well as archival and research projects exploring the language, politics and formation of dialogues, misunderstandings and negotiations around official documents. The exhibition takes as its point of departure the spirit of the Tripoli Agreement, a peace accord between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front signed in Tripoli, Libya in 1976.

The exhibition proposes moments for artistic imagination, archival mediation and diasporic intelligence to assert their agencies and articulations in the diplomatic life of political projects. Works by artists Mark Salvatus, Prajakta Potnis, Sina Seifee and titre provisoire are viewed together with works from research platforms such as From Bandung to Berlin and Malaysia Design Archive. The project also introduces cross-disciplinary practices of translation by Filipino avant-garde composer and ethnomusicologist Jose Maceda (1917-2004) and Kanoon: Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults. These presentations of contemporary works and archival materials are staged as itinerant encounters of transnational thinking, cultural production and institution-making that reveal contexts and desires for collective understanding and intimate connections.

A Tripoli Agreement is the culmination of Laru-an’s research supported by the Air Arabia Curator-in-Residence Programme. As part of the residency, he travelled from Sharjah to Beirut, Istanbul and Tehran, meeting with artists and researchers in order to develop an exhibition that explores the conditions before and after the 1976 peace agreement and the intertwined histories of the different regions involved.
