AL MIDFA: FESTIVAL EXPECTED TO ATTRACT THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES FROM ACROSS THE UAE AND REGION
Date Published: Wednesday, December 10, 2014 The eighth edition of the region’s leading popular family entertainment and sporting event, Sharjah Water Festival, being held from December 17 to 20 at Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon this year, promises loads of fun, interesting surprises and exciting offerings, announced HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority in the presence of a large number of Sharjah officials, dignitaries, event partners and media. Waves of fun will sweep Al Majaz Waterfront and Khalid Lagoon with some of the most spectacular events and attractions, including daring water sports by international teams, being lined up once again. The highlight of the Sharjah Water Festival will be the UIM Formula 1 H20 World Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, to be hosted by the emirate on 18-19 December in the picturesque Khalid Lagoon for the 15th consecutive year. Addressing a Press conference on Wednesday with festival partners and sponsors at Hilton Sharjah, Al Midfa said, if this year has been truly outstanding in many respects for Sharjah with the Emirate being crowned as the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2014, next year will be even more exciting as we all look forward to Sharjah being crowned the Capital of Arab Tourism for 2015. The SCTDA Director General said that the new year will bring with it a number of special activities and world-class events, translating the directives of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. The Sharjah Water Festival returns once again to attract thousands of families from across the country and the region, offering visitors of all ages, especially children, lots of fun and a selection of world-class events celebrating Sharjah’s unique cultural identity and status as a complete tourist destination. In addition to a host of activities like sand sculptures by international artists and Heritage Village celebrating local traditions and culture, there will be the Carnival and Roaming Musicians Shows as always to entertain the festival visitors and families. There will be the special ‘Meet and Greet’ opportunity with the SWF mascot Mouj, which is awaited by thousands of children every year. Underscoring the strategic nature of the annual event in Sharjah’s calendar, Al Midfa said, “the Sharjah Water Festival since its inception has had tremendous success, year after year, and we have a huge responsibility to maintain this success, pursuing excellence and constant improvement in all our activities. We are keen to come up with something new and uniquely exciting every year.” The UIM Formula One H20 World Powerboat Championship, the Sharjah Grand Prix, is considered the most important sporting event in the region that determines the world champion in this sport, and attracts worldwide attention from various local, regional and international media. The SCTDA Director General said that as in the past, the Authority has been running an intensive media campaign to promote the Sharjah Water Festival in and outside the country and at various international exhibitions and SCTDA roadshows in cities and capitals across Asia, the Gulf and Europe. The Authority has also invited international journalists and media to visit Sharjah to witness the Festival and be part of Sharjah’s unique tourism experience with its authentic heritage, landmarks and special features that have earned it a special place on the world tourism map.
