HE Al Midfa: Festival in its sixth year attracted more than 650,000 visitors during 10 days of the event

Date Published: Wednesday, February 17, 2016 Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) concluded the Sharjah Light Festival 2016 at a ceremony organized in the University City Hall attended by HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Chairman of SCTDA; HE Riad Abdullah Ahmad Abdullah Eilan, Director General of Sharjah Municipality; Dr. Rashad Salem, Vice Chancellor of Al Qasimia University; HE Mohammed Diab Al Mousa, Adviser at the Royal Court in Sharjah; Dr. Ali Obaid Al Zaabi, Director of the University of Sharjah, Khorfakkan Branch; Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, Chief Operating Officer, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq); Sultan Mohammed Shattaf, Al Qasba Manager; Mohammed Fadhil Al Mazroui, Al Majaz Waterfront Manager, as well as representatives of sponsors of the event and local and regional media. In his speech during the ceremony, HE Al Midfa attributed the success of Sharjah’s tourism industry to the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. “His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan has been a source of inspiration to all of us in our efforts to achieve the Sharjah Tourism Vision. The support of His Highness has been vital to enable us to activate the various ideas to improve the tourism sector in our glittering Emirate of Sharjah.” HE Al Midfa said that in its expanded format this year across 23 shows around the emirate, Sharjah Light Festival gave more residents and visitors the opportunity to witness its shows. “We promise you that we will continue on this path of innovation in the coming years, offering you more unforgettable events and festivals that will capture your imagination,” HE Al Midfa added. HE Al Midfa said the Sharjah Light Festival, organised for the sixth consecutive year, attracted more than 650,000 visitors during 10 days from the country, region and the world. The festival also created massive interest on SCTDA websites and social media accounts during the festival with the number of impressions reaching 2.8 million compared to 180,000 impressions last year according to Google analytics. HE Al Midfa is keen to highlight the cultural identity of Sharjah through this festival, especially with the new shows that have added cultural value to the festival and attracted large number of families from the country and the region. He said the festival impressed everyone with its creative shows, which highlighted the aesthetics of architectural designs and components of heritage and cultural of landmarks in Sharjah. Sharjah Light Festival 2016 has added a new record of achievement for the tourism sector in Sharjah, he added. He said the Authority is keen to support artists from within the country to develop their talents and participate in the various shows of the festival. In his address, HE Al Midfa also expressed thanks to all those who contributed to the success and development of the Sharjah Light Festival in its sixth year, especially the sponsors of the event, and all local, Arab and international media, who helped showcase the event before the world. At the conclusion of the ceremony, HE Al Midfa honoured government agencies, sponsors and artists as well as representatives of the local and regional media for their support and participation in the event. Sharjah Light Festival 2016 witnessed shows across a large number of shows to enable the maximum number of visitors and public to enjoy the festival. The new shows were University City Hall, Sharjah Center for Astronomy and Space Sciences - Planetarium, Al Qasimia University, Masjid Al Qasimia University, Jubail New Market, Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah, and the Cultural Palace. During the festival, select buildings around the Buhairah Corniche were washed in bright colours of light. The Palm Oasis featured the unique Infinity Light Tunnel which enchanted adults and children alike. Al Majaz Waterfront hosted Narcissus, an installation that enabled visitors to enjoy the reflection of their selfies in enormous proportions. Select bridges in Sharjah, the Government Buildings at Al Akd Al Fareed St. Dibba Al Hisn, and Kalba Corniche Park were also illuminated with impressive lighting during the festival. The shows of the festival continued this year in a number of well-known locations, which included Al Qasba (Internal Facades), Masjid Al Taqwa (Al Majaz Waterfront), Masjid Al Noor, Masjid Al Maghfira, Al Majaz Amphitheatre, Cultural Square, Al Majaz Waterfront, Khalid Lagoon Corniche Light Design Show, and you will see the light festival logo at the main gateways to the city. On the East Coast of the Emirate, Sharjah University – Khorfakkan, and Masjid Ammar bin Yasser in Al Dhaid are also retouched in colour. During the Sharjah Light Festival, the city sightseeing buses were packed with large number of people on board, enabling people to enjoy the festival across the emirate. The Sharjah Light Festival is considered as a major tourism event that contributes immensely to the growth of the tourism sector in the emirate. SCTDA is keen to develop the annual event to match the expectations of visitors and tourists. It also works to promote the festival in all the target markets, through its participation in the specialized travel and tourism events as well as annual promotional roadshows.
