Sharjah Tourism To Support 4th International Open Athletics Meeting for Handicapped
Date Published: Thursday, February 20, 2014 AL MIDFA: EMIRATE IDEALLY SUITED TO HOST SPECIAL SPORTING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES Sharjah boasts a truly diverse and colorful calendar of events ranging from heritage and culture to business and sports and Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority is keen to support and encourage many of such activities, said Khalid Jasim Al Midfa. This came in his statement announcing the Authority’s sponsorship of the 4th International Open Athletics Meeting for Handicapped which is being hosted by Al Thiqa Club in Sharjah on 27th and 28th February, 2014. Al Midfa reiterated the Authority’s keenness to support and encourage activities that help serve society’s interests in conformity with Sharjah’s position as an Emirate dedicated to social and humanitarian causes as well as a great centre of diverse cultural, arts and sports activities and events. “This is an expression of the SCTDA’s commitment to society. Sharjah is sparing no effort to support the physically challenged through a number of associations and clubs that help and engage people with special needs in the UAE society,” Al Midfa emphasised. A formal announcement about the Championship will be made at a press conference by Al Thiqa Club in Sharjah on Thursday, February 20. The SCTDA is the gold sponsor of the special sporting event for people with special needs. Al Midfa pointed out that Sharjah has developed special infrastructure for special needs offering security and safety for the handicapped. Educational institutions, malls, government offices and tourism projects etc in the Emirate are equipped with amenities for the handicapped. He said that Sharjah is an ideal destination for the organization of a number of tournaments and sporting events in the region and the world, adding to the Emirate’s reputation as the host of the World Championship Formula 1 Powerboat -- Sharjah Grand Prix, which is organized by the Authority in December every year and attracts tens of thousands of spectators. “Sharjah is a truly global destination with a year-long calendar of various festivals, events and activities that keep residents and visitors to the Emirate creatively engaged all through the year,” added Al Midfa The Authority supported and sponsored a number of international and national event and activities in 2013 that included the Second Government Communication Forum, Sharjah Heritage Days and Sharjah Children's Reading Festival, Ramadan Charity Campaign, the Khorfakkan Football Championship for the Blind and 3rd Sharjah International Open Athletics Meeting, Sharjah International Cycling Tour and Sharjah Ruler’s International Showjumping Championship etc.
