When to go to Sharjah

When to go to Sharjah

For a great all-round experience with the option of camping, hiking, hitting the beach and other outdoors activities, it’s best to visit Sharjah between November and April when the climate stays comfortably warm. Things heat up during the rest of the year, but the region is well-used to managing the high temperatures and humidity so you’ll still find plenty to do when the mercury rises, including lingering in cool art galleries and museums or relaxing in air-conditioned restaurants.

Bargaining at souqs

Bargaining at souqs

A bit of to-and-froing over prices in Sharjah’s souqs can be a lot of fun, and if you strike a good deal, make your purchases all the more satisfying. A good approach is to decide in advance what the item is worth to you, and don’t be coaxed above that price. Take your time, and be prepared to leave the goods behind if you’re not getting close to the price you want – of course the ‘walkaway’ can often persuade the shopkeeper to knock the price down in the end anyway! Keep a cool head, stay friendly and enjoy the conversation, as it’s almost always the experience that’s of more value than the souvenir.

Dressing appropriately

Dressing appropriately

It’s a good idea to dress carefully while in Sharjah to make sure both you and the locals feel comfortable. Men and women are expected to cover knees and shoulders when out and about, and avoid tight or see-through clothing. Swimwear is permitted on public beaches, but it’s best to stick to conservative styles – avoid Speedo-type trunks, thongs or skimpy bikinis. On private or hotel beaches, you can wear whatever you like. Finally, wear long loose clothing and cover arms and legs when visiting mosques. Women may be asked to cover their heads too and some mosques loan headscarves for the duration of the visit.

The long-anticipated Sharjah Mosque is now open to the public, and is a peaceful, contemplative place to visit for both Muslim and non-Muslim travellers. The extensive grounds are home to atmospheric gardens and water fountains, along with a walkway circling the grounds. The impressive main prayer hall features walls decorated with verses from the Quran, arched stained-glass windows and a huge chandelier. There’s also a gift shop, cafeteria and large library onsite. Visitors should wear long, loose clothing with arms and legs covered.
