Tour and taste farm fresh dates in this old souk

When it comes to Arabic food, a helping of dates is tradition. For an authentic experience in Sharjah, explore the many varieties of dates at the date souk and learn all about the fruit that is symbolic of local culture and hospitality.

With several mounds of fresh and dried dates on display, traders encourage you to sample their wares as you browse. Children especially love to try these naturally sweet treats, which come from across Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran and across the Middle East. Dates here can cost as little as AED 10 per kilogram or as much as AED 150, depending on the variety. The souk features virtually every type of date, including the popular Medjool, Arwa, Bou Maan and Dabbas. In addition to stocking up on dates for their homes, locals often come here as one of their things to do with kids. Adults and kids alike enjoy sampling the national fruit of the UAE in all its rich varieties. If you ask locals about Sharjah tourist places, locals recommend the Date Souk.

Like most of the souks in the city, the date emporium comes alive during the weekend and in the evening. So if you’re looking for a bustling marketplace, put this on your list of places to visit in Sharjah at night. The Date Souk is especially busy during the Holy Month of Ramadan, with people stocking up on dates to break their fast. In the middle of the year, there are also a range of summer activities for kids along the Sharjah corniche close by.
