Hidden behind its prosaic name, the Kalba Ice factory is the home to far more impressive content. The Kalba Ice Factory project is one of the major conservation projects launched by the Sharjah Art Foundation in recent years to preserve the rich heritage of the architectural environment in the Emirate of Sharjah, and to create spaces that allow the display of contemporary art and a meeting place for the local community.  Previous similar projects include the Flying Saucer Building, the Rain Room, Al Hamriya Studios, and the art buildings in Al Mureijah Square.

The building has been renovated and restored to embrace its architectural details and provide artistic and social spaces, the halls display a number of international works belonging to prominent international artists. The most distinctive feature of the building is its location next to the Kalba Creek and the Mangrove Reserve, in an area of Sharjah rich in environmental biodiversity, home to many endangered species, including the Arabian Collared Kingfisher, Blanford lizard, Hawksbill turtles, and green turtles, which nest close to the beach. During the renovation of the factory, its original industrial architecture was preserved, with minimal intrusions. The natural light provided by the building's high windows is an ideal space for large-scale installations and performances.
